Savannah firefighters are trying to find out what led to a huge blaze that gutted a building early today. Shortly after 4am this morning, someone noticed flames coming from some second story apartments above a business at Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard and West 42nd Street.
When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out of the windows and spreading through the wood-frame building. They went to work quickly, attacking the blaze from several different directions, including from above with a ladder truck.
They were able to make headway, but the fire spread quickly to the business below before they could get the flames out.
They searched the building, but no one was found inside. They have called for a fire investigator to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
