Savannah-Chatham police are investigating a deadly overnight accident in southwest Chatham County. Just after midnight, motorists reported an accident on Highway 204 near Fort Argyle Road and Joyner's Corners.
Investigators believe the driver was heading east on 204 at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the car. It went off the road and into a culvert, then went airborne and slammed into a utility pole. The pole was splintered from the impact, and the car came to rest on the other side of the culvert.
The first people on the scene say the driver was already out of the car, walking around, and was bleeding heavily from the head. He was rushed to Memorial Health for treatment. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Accident investigators are still trying to find out what made the driver lose control of the car. No names have been released yet.
