SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A vacant apartment that was being prepared for new tenants was damaged Friday morning in a fire.

It happened shortly after 8 a.m. in a vacant unit at the Royal Oaks apartment homes on Noble Oaks Drive.

Workers inside the house were restoring the power to the unit and the stove had been previously left on despite the power being turned off. Items that were placed on the stove then caught fire when the power was restored.

Responding fire crews had the fire contained and out within minutes of arrival. Fire officials believe it started on the stove and quickly spread up into the walls.

Three units had to be evacuated but no injuries were reported. At least one unit sustained minor damage.

The fire is out and the scene has been cleared. Investigators will now take a hard look into the cause due to the fact that no one lives in the unit where the fire originated.
