SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A judge told a jury in an elder abuse case that it was unlikely that they would finish up Friday, asked them if they would prefer to continue Saturday or Monday.

The jury will return Saturday at 9 a.m. to hear closing arguments and deliberate.

Maria Wiggins and her boyfriend Michael Nesmith are facing charges for the abuse of Wiggins' 68-year-old mother. The defense called its first witness to the stand on Friday morning.

A former Effingham Hospital doctor who treated Wiggins' mother for three years testified for the defense. The doctor said he never saw any signs of neglect and that bruising and scraping were common sightings for her because of her medical conditions.

The doctor also testified that she may have experienced hallucinations from some of her medical conditions.

Brittany Nesmith, the victim's granddaughter, who testified that her parents Wiggins and Nesmith did not abuse her grandmother. She said that they were doing everything they could to take care of her.
