Section of West Bay Street reopens

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

West Bay Street between East Lathrop Avenue and Fahm Street is reopening to traffic, but Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are cautioning drivers about driving in the areas around an active warehouse fire.

Heavy smoke still can affect portions of Interstate 16, Interstate 516 and even Interstate 95 as well as the Talmadge Bridge. Drivers are being asked to slow down and use extra caution.

Firefighters from Savannah Fire and Emergency Services with help from the Garden City Fire Dept. have been working to contain the fire at Ocean Terminal warehouse No. 3 on West River Street since about 11:30 a.m. and are expected to continue through the night until as late as 8 a.m. Sunday, according to an SCMPD news release.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police said that while the majority of the fire is out, heavy smoke continues to drift toward the west.
