Jury reaches verdict in elder abuse case

GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) -

According to the Garden City Police Dept., the jury has reached a verdict in the Garden City elder abuse case against Maria Wiggins and Michael Nesmith.

The jury returned a guilty verdict on all counts except for elder abuse. Sentencing is scheduled for next week.

Investigators said Wiggins and Nesmith refused to give Wiggins' mother food and dragged her around the house. They were also accused of stealing the elderly woman's Social Security money and prescription medication.

Police were tipped off after the woman arrived at the hospital with bruises.
