ECSO alerts public of courts scam

Posted: Updated:
EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office is alerting the public of a scam involving the county's court system.

On at least one occasion, someone contacted a victim and said there was a fine they needed to pay for contempt of court.

The caller gave the victim a PayPal account and told the victim to send them $500.

"The Effingham County Sheriff's Office does not contact anyone by phone directing them to put money on an account to pay a bond or for any other reason," Sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.

Deputies hand deliver subpoenas or any process, and jury notices will come by mail.

If anyone feels like they have been a victim of this scam, they are asked to contact the Effingham County Sheriff's Office at 912.754.3449.
