Edwards Named Public Defender

A longtime Savannah attorney has a new title. Michael Edwards is the new public defender for Chatham County. The indigent defense system throughout the State of Georgia is being rearranged. As a result, Edwards will officially take office in January.

Other attorneys will also be used as-needed to help with the caseload.

"The percentage of cases that the public defender's office will handle will quite clearly start in January," said Edwards. "We're going to make a determination at that time based on our staffing, how many cases can we handle out of that office, and the balance of the cases will simply be handled by the current voluntary panel."

Edwards' staff will be made up of several people who are leaving their jobs in the private sector to work for the county.
