Effingham County readies for possible winter weather

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, GA (WTOC) -

With ice creeping down into the northern reaches of our viewing area, are we ready?

These past several weeks it's seemed like Mother Nature can't seem to make up her mind. You never know what season you'll wake up to in the morning.

According to WTOC Meteorologist John Wetherbee, cold snaps like these are common in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry. Wetherbee said we just haven't seen them over the past five years.

With the ground already wet, more rain is expected in the morning in the northern reaches of WTOC's viewing area, and a freeze is expected Tuesday night.

The concern for public safety officials then will be bridges and overpasses. Local law enforcement is already warning, if a hard freeze happens Tuesday night, stay off the roads.

"When the last storm came through here a few weeks ago, we actually saw less traffic accidents than we do on an average day," said Effingham Sheriff's Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor. "And that's because people were really listening to us."

He said emphatically that if a big freeze does happen in Springfield, it won't be anything like what was seen two weeks ago in Atlanta.
