Chatham County holds annual spelling bee

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The annual Chatham County Spelling Bee took place Monday night at the Savannah State University Student Union Building.

Spelling Bee winners and alternatives from local elementary and middle schools participated in the spelling bee with a goal of becoming Chatham County's top speller.

The winner of this year's bee was Catherine Nguyen from The STEM Academy at Bartlett Middle School. Second place went to Je'meiah Coney, a fourth-grader from Spencer Elementary School, and third place went to Michael Williams, an eighth-grader from Oglethorpe Academy.

The winning word for Nguyen was, Glamour. She is now practicing for the next round of spelling championships which takes place March 1 in Waycross.

The annual spelling bee is sponsored by the Chatham Association of Educators.
