Cats at Animal Control under quarantine

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Cats will not be accepted or up for adoption due to a three-week quarantine that has been implemented after cats at the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police's Animal Control test positive for serious illnesses.

Cats will be taken in cases of injured animals, bite cases, feral and obviously ill cats.

Animal Control officers noticed some cats that were ill and had cultures tested. Some cats have tested positive for feline herpes virus infection, microplasma and bordetella.

Animal control officers told the Georgia Department of Agriculture and initiated a self-imposed quarantine for cats over the next three weeks.

Medical staff have advised that cats displaying signs of the illness be euthanized upon arrival to prevent the spread of the illnesses, according to the SCMPD.
