Sewage spill occurs on Largo Drive

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill Monday at a ditch at 12328 Largo Dr.

The spill was caused by a grease blockage in an 8-inch diameter gravity sewer main, which resulted in 385 gallons to sewage to be spilled, according to the city.   

The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 2:58 p.m. and fixed the problem at 4:15 p.m. The blockage was cleared and the mix of contaminated and drainage water was pumped from the canal and back into the sewer collection system. 

The spill was contained. The ditch was flushed and lime was placed on the affected area.  They will be conducting sampling.  Notifications about the spill were put at the spill site and Wilshire Canal at White Bluff. 

All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
