People in Hampton County brace for winter storm

Posted: Updated:
HAMPTON CO., SC (WTOC) -

It's cold out now and getting colder with the very real possibility of some ice in our area.

But for people in Hampton County, you could call this round two.

The steady rain continued until late in the evening which may have helped to keep people off the roads.

We didn't find many cars in the parking lot of the local Piggly Wiggly on Elm Street, but those who were there picked up some last minute items in preparation for the storm.

Emergency Management officials say the public took their advice two weeks ago and they are encouraging everyone to do the same this time: stay inside your homes and off the roads.

DOT crews have about 40 tons of salt and sand on hand if they have to activate their snow and ice plan. They also have about 800 gallons of calcium chloride to pre-treat the bridges and primary routes.

"No, we're not going to do that Atlanta thing, stay off the street, what we're going to do is prepare in Hampton and I always say 'nothing is wrong until something happens' and I believe in the five P's: Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance," said Estill resident John Martin.

All Hampton County schools and government offices are closed Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Both Hampton 1 and 2 school districts will decide early afternoon Wednesday on whether or not to have classes on Thursday.
