Hitting black ice: How to handle your car in icy conditions

LADSON, SC (WCSC) -

Some messy road conditions are expected Tuesday night and Wednesday and a big concern for many drivers is the formation of black ice on area roadways.

Owner of Honest-1 Auto Care in Goose Creek, Sherry Rector, recommends you take your foot off the gas and avoid slamming your brakes.

"Just steer into whichever direction that the car starts skidding in. So, if it's sliding off the road, if you steer into it, it will bring the front end of the car with the back end of the car, it will help level it out."

She says let your car guide you on the ice and focus on steering.

"You virtually have no control over the car at that time. So, what you're trying to do is put yourself in a position to recover. You're not going to steer in the ice. The wheels aren't turning. You have no control."

She says the most important thing to remember is not to tailgate.

"The vehicle's reaction is going to be much slower in wet and poor conditions. So, if you can just give yourself a little extra space between you and the car in front of you, it will give you more time to react in case you run into a problem."
