Transportation department working on SC roads

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Transportation department employees are working to keep South Carolina's roads open as a winter storm drops snow and sleet and freezing rain.

The agency said early Wednesday that roads are wet in most counties.

The agency said employees are working 12-hour shifts to apply salt and other de-icing materials on the roads. A number of crews have been moved from the Lowcountry to the Upstate to deal with heavy snow.

The department has closed the Ravenel Bridge linking Charleston and Mount Pleasant. Officials have been treating the bridge with a brine mix since Tuesday night. Efforts begin around 4 a.m. Wednesday to put granular salt on the bridge.

Ice falling from the bridge supports in a storm two weeks prompted officials to close it for hours.
