ATLANTA (WTOC/AP) - Georgia utility companies report that nearly 200,000 customers were without power as ice coated trees and branches are bringing power lines down across the state.
Georgia Power reported that nearly 120,000 of its customers were still without power early Wednesday afternoon, but crews have been able to restore power to customers who lost it during the early hours of the storm.

More than 71,000 of those still without power were in metro Atlanta. Another 29,000 customers were in eastern Georgia. Others were scattered elsewhere in the state.
Georgia's electric membership cooperatives said more than 60,000 customers were without power early Wednesday afternoon. Among the hardest-hit of the 41 cooperatives was the Coweta-Fayette EMC, where more than 12,000 customers in eight Georgia counties were without power around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

In Effingham County, there are five Georgia Power trucks on standby. They are responding to reports as they come in. Along Hwy 21, ice has already covered the trees.

The latest count Wednesday shows there are about 130,000 electric customers in South Carolina without power. Most are in the area south of Interstate 20 where ice, and not snow, is the main problem.

In Hampton County, SC, the public works director said there are an estimated 30 trees down throughout the county. There are about six roads closed.
