Court scam hits Effingham County

Posted: Updated:
EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Some people in Effingham County have been scammed out of hundreds of dollars.

Investigators say it's a court scam and scammers are impersonating Effingham County Sheriff's deputies and demanding that money be transferred to a PayPal account because the citizen is in contempt of court.

"If the sheriff's office needs to contact you or serve you with papers or something like that, you're going to find a deputy on your door step in uniform, and they will have papers for you," said Effingham County Sheriff's Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor. "We are not going to contact you by telephone."

If you have been a victim of this scam, or have any information, contact the Effingham County Sheriff's Office at (912) 754-3449.
