Crews monitor ice in Effingham

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The wintry, icy winter weather reached its grip down into Effingham County as well. Crews have been monitoring the conditions for icy roads and power outages.

What seemed like a beautiful winter wonderland with trees glistening with ice along State Highway 21, authorities worry it's a recipe for a disaster.

WTOC found Georgia Power crews ready to go, responding to reports of outages as they came in.

By lunchtime on Wednesday, there were only a handful of power outages, but crews expected that to increase as the day wears on.

"Our biggest concern right now is what could happen later on this afternoon and later on tonight," said ECSO Spokesperson David Ehsanipoor. "If the temperatures fall low enough the water [on the road] will end up freezing."

Effingham County officials are asking people to stay off the roads.  If you need to drive, take extra precautions and watch out for any black ice.
