GA DOT prepares for dangerous conditions

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

As the winter storm bears down on our area, one of the biggest concerns is the road conditions.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is watching for slick highways, streets and bridges.

WTOC rode along with a crew as they inspected bridges and overpasses. They've got a pretty simple way of doing it.

DOT crews just slide their feet against the cement to check for any possible ice or slick conditions. More than 300 crews are on standby in our district.

DOT has 110 tons of salt, 4,083 tons of gravel and 1,400 tons of sand ready to be deployed.

"We are looking right now in the Statesboro area, Efifingham and Candler counties," said GA DOT Communications Spokesperson Jill Nagel. "We are seeing lower temperatures in those areas. Be very careful of black ice, if you are on ice you won't be able to see it."

DOT sent crews to help in Atlanta and Augusta. They also expect Statesboro and areas in middle and northern Georgia to experience icing roadways, downed power lines and trees.
