Crews work to restore power lines in Hampton County

HAMPTON CO., SC (WTOC) -

Emergency Management said it could take as long as Saturday morning until crews are able to restore power in all of the areas in Hampton County.

Driving up Hwy. 601, several trees could still be seen hanging over power lines and some lines that were stretched across the road.

Utility crews have been working through the night and they will continue to do so until the winter weather subsides.

Palmetto Electric has requested some help from their state co-op and one power crew in Georgia.

"It was pretty difficult, as soon as we would get lines back on, tree limbs would fall, ice on them, it just kept knocking them out. Now everything's kind of melting, we're getting a lot more progress done," said Travis Malphrus from Palmetto Electric.

Schools have also been cancelled tomorrow in Hampton County.

One family, who prepared in advance for the storm, said it's making their experience a little easier.

Their front window is one of the only places where you'll find light inside the DeLoach home.

The family of six kids, plus their grandmother, have been have been staying together ever since they lost power around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

"It's been really, really crazy and kind of scary knowing that trees can fall on our houses and our cars and we can't go nowhere," said seventh grader De'Asia DeLoach.

The family may be stuck inside their home but they say they're prepared for this storm.

They stocked up on gallons of water by reusing their milk jugs while living off of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and cereal.

"It's kind of nice, family together, you don't have TV or anything like that, you just make things work out really good," said grandmother Peggy DeLoach.

At night, the family grabs their blankets and huddle around their kerosene heater.

It's not the most ideal situation but they're staying warm, and catching up on a little quality time with family, a rare opportunity in this modern age.
