According to the U.S. Geologocal Survey, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake occurred seven miles outside of Edgefield, SC.

Edgefield is situated approximately 20 miles northeast of Augusta, GA.

It was a shallow earthquake, situated about two miles underground. The quake was felt largely because of the sedimentary and limestone nature of the soil.

The earthquake was felt in parts of Georgia, South Carolina and even parts of North Carolina.

According to the USGS, no aftershocks are expected.

This is the 13th earthquake in the past 12 months for South Carolina. The state normally experiences 15-20 earthquakes per year.

This is the highest magnitude earthquake since Nov. 11, 2002, when a 4.4 magnitude earthquake was registered near the epicenter close to Charleston.

The largest earthquake recorded on the East Coast had a 7.3 magnitude, centered in Summerville, SC., in 1886.
