Police: Man spotted, arrested driving stolen SUV on I-16

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

ASavannah man is nabbed less than a day after the car he was driving was stolenin a robbery.

Savannah-ChathamMetro Police said that an alert off-duty officer and SCMPD and Georgia statetroopers working together on Sunday led to the arrest of 24-year-old DerrickLeonard Middleton.

Middletonlost control of the 2008 Honda Element on I-16 and then ran off, according topolice. Troopers and police officers caught him early Sunday morning. He was chargedwith two counts of theft by receiving stolen property by SCMPD's Robbery Unitdetectives and speeding, no permit, reckless driving and fleeing to eludepolice officers by the Georgia State Patrol.

TheHonda he was driving was stolen from a 31-year-old Savannah woman. She wasconfronted by a gunman while walking up to her on West Hall Street. The gunmantook her keys and purse about 3 a.m. Saturday.

Anoff-duty SCMPD officer in his personal vehicle on Interstate 16 recognized theHonda and its Virginia license plate Sunday and alerted police. Troopers anduniformed Metro officers followed the Honda back toward Savannah and tried tostop it with stop sticks.

Thedriver eluded the sticks but crashed into a guard rail before trying to runfrom the officers. Police saturated the area. Troopers and officers ran afterMiddleton. He was caught 75 yards into a wooded area.

Policesaid Middleton has a history of arrests by SCMPD going back to 2007.
