SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A Springfield car chase ended after an alleged car thief crashed into a snow bank in Forest Park and fled on foot at about 2 a.m. Saturday, according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.

Detectives patrolling the Forest Park area spotted a stolen red Honda Accord, but when they attempted to pull the car over near the intersection of Sumner Avenue and Longhill Street, the suspect sped away, Delaney said.

The officers followed the car down side streets, and the thief eventually drove the wrong way down Longhill Street into Forest Park, Delaney said.

The driver, 25-year-old Jonathan Betancourt, of 99 Jefferson Ave., Springfield, then crashed into a large snowbank inside the park and fled on foot. The officers chased him down and arrested him, Delaney said.

The suspect fought with the officers after he fell in the snow, but he was eventually arrested. Police found "punch keys" on Betancourt, which are used by car thieves targeting Hondas and Acuras, Delaney said.

Betancourt was charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver's license, possession of burglar tools, and resisting arrest, according to an arrest report.

Betancourt was held over the weekend in a Springfield lockup pending his arraignment in Springfield District Court.
