WTOC Senior Active: Bob Buck

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Bob Buck served in the Air Force, but he committed himself to the Mighty Eighth Air Force when he heard the museum was looking for volunteers.

"I came down to a meeting on a Saturday," said Buck, who has volunteered at the museum for nine years. "I read about 12 books about the Eighth Air Force to get up to date."

Now Buck keeps museum visitors up to date as an on-call tour guide, sharing the history he had researched.

Once at the museum, Buck discovered the Mighty Eighth Birthplace Chapter and is now that chapter's president, planning its meetings, writing its newsletter and preserving its legacy.

"We meet monthly, have dinner here at the museum and we have a speaker," said Buck. "I tell you what, with questions and answers, we get into some very, very interesting discussions. The Eighth Air Force has chapters around the country, and unfortunately they're decreasing because of the age of the members and so forth."

The Hilton Head Island resident also plays golf, gardens and rides a bike every day.

However, his passion for the Mighty Eighth has taken over most of his time.

"This is unique because of the history of this place, the history of the Eighth Air Force and of course, the second World War,'' says Buck. "It's very enjoyable to me. I really enjoy doing it. I just hope we can continue to preserve what these men did, not only for our country but for our freedom and so forth.''
