BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

Beaufort-JasperWater and Sewer Authority said Monday that it has eliminated the funny tasteand smell from water coming out of its Chelsea water treatment plant.

Theagency said water is now free from the earthy taste and odor. Test results determinedthat a rare winter algae bloom in the reservoir produced an organic compound, geosmin, which resulted in the problem.

Thereservoir was taken offline two weeks ago once and geosmin was found to be the source, according to the BJWSA. Water produced at the Chelsea plant then beganreturning to normal.

BJWSA finishedits distribution system flushing in northern Beaufort County last week. Recentreservoir tests indicate continued significant water quality improvement, and BJWSAis working to place the reservoir back online.

BJWSAhas also hired Hazen and Sawyer, an engineering consulting firm, to study itssource water conveyance system.
