Screven outages dropping, debris piles rising

SYLVANIA, GA (WTOC) -

More homes have power restored after utility crews worked the weekend to repair damage from the ice storm.

"Planters EMC still had about 7,000 meters down early Sunday morning. When they started this morning, they were down to 1,500," explained Screven County EMA director Harvey Cryder Jr.

Cryder said EMC crews continue to repair and replace lines to restore service. In addition, the county must determine where they'll dispose of hundreds of tons of fallen trees and limbs left by the storm.

He urged homeowners to check any businesses that offer debris cleanup and removal.

"Make sure they have a license, have insurance, and have some references. Plenty of companies will be swarming around here offering work. If they charge, their fee must include disposal. They can't just pile it at your curb," he noted.
