STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Georgia Southern released a statement on Tuesday afternoon saying Dominique Shawn Swope, a fullback on the Georgia Southern University football team, has been removed from the team after being charged with aggravated battery.

Statesboro police said that Swope turned himself in Monday night in connection with aggravated battery charges.

Swope turned himself in at about 11 p.m. Monday to the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office after a warrant was issued for his arrest by Statesboro police. He is charged with aggravated battery.

Police said Swope was involved in an altercation at the Cambridge at Southern apartment complex on Lanier Drive that resulted in Cameron Zaquan Lewis, receiving a serious head trauma.

Police launched the investigation at about 3:15 p.m. Feb. 9 when Statesboro police responded to East Georgia Regional Medical Center on a report that Lewis had been brought to the hospital by friends.

The case was turned over to Det. Sgt. James Winskey who, through further investigation, identified Swope as the suspect, according to police.

Statement from Georgia Southern:

Dominique Swope was taken into custody in connection with an incident that occurred a couple of weeks ago. Coach Fritz and AD Tom Kleinlein met and after several conversations with law enforcement officials have decided that the best course of action is to remove Dominique from the team. His return to the team will be determined once he goes through the legal process and there is a better understanding of his involvement with this incident from a legal perspective.
