Georgia Southern University junior Melissa Royal was named Miss GeorgiaSouthern University during the 2014 scholarship pageant on Feb. 15.

Royal was one of 10 contestants tocompete for the title. She is an Spanish and International Trade major fromAcworth, Ga., and president of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and aSouthern Leader.

Royal's platform is "Connecting theGlobal Community through Microlending," which focuses on helping to end global poverty.

She will represent Georgia Southernat the Miss Georgia competition. She will also represent the university whileattending the Savannah St. Patrick's Day parade, Georgia Southern'sorientation, open house and recruitment events, Homecoming and select communityevents by invitation.

Royal will receive a $1,500scholarship, a $500 travel stipend, three free months at Omni Fight Club ofStatesboro, a full spa day at Serenity Day Spa including various spa and salonservices, a complimentary photo shoot from Lori Grice Photography, a specialevents wardrobe from Frills and a Miss Georgia professional consultation andinterview preparation.

Senior public relations majorAmanda Lawler, of Toombs, GA, was the first runner up, multimediacommunications major and public relations minor Miki Argiriou, of Brunswick,was the second runner up.
