Open house on GA 144 widening project coming up

Posted: Updated:

A major project is in the works for one of the only roads in and out of a growing community.  Anyone traveling in and out of the city of Richmond Hill is getting some help, but the solution will cause some growing pains.

Desiree Shores agrees, "A lot has changed in Richmond Hill."  Shores owns a beauty salon along GA Hwy 144 for four years, and the Georgia Department of Transportation plans on widening a little more than 5 miles of this state route starting right in front of her business.

She commented, "I'm sure there's going to be a lot traffic with the construction and that's going to be a nightmare, but for the most of us who live down 144, we're excited."

Shores says the real nightmare is traveling this route every morning and afternoon with what seems like everyone else.

"It's bumper to bumper!" She laments, "They're all leaving for work and drop their kids off at school at the same time, and you all just bottleneck."

Shores knows firsthand about scenes like these along the state route. She was in wreck not too long ago and feels lucky she walked away.

"When you're in a lot of traffic and one person slams on brakes, then the next person and the next person, you end up...somebody at the end of the line."

And where 144 goes down from four lanes to two, she hopes the expansion will help end her travel woes and those of her fellow drivers.

That widening will begin at Timber Trail Road to just south of Belfast Keller Road.  The open house is happening the 20th, with a firsthand look at what the widening may look like. It's at the Bryan County Administrative Complex on Matthew Freeman Drive from 4-7pm.
