MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

The Alabama State Senate took time Tuesday morning to honor an Olympian.

Birmingham-native Vonetta Flowers was recognized on the Senate floor. She competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. She became the first African-American and the first Alabamian to win a Gold Medal at the Winter Olympic Games for her performance in the two-woman bobsledding race alongside Jill Bakken.

"It feels good," Flowers said. "I haven't been here in twelve years; it'll be twelve years tomorrow. It makes me feel really good to still be recognized, and people still remember my race. It makes me feel really proud to be from Alabama."

Flowers started bobsledding when she was 26 years old and is a UAB graduate.
