Bluffton man charged with assault after sucker punching guest

BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

A Bluffton man was charged with first degreeassault and battery Monday.  

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff'sOffice, the man is accused of disfiguring another man with a punch.

Raleigh Vinvent Ward, Jr., 33, was at hisQuail Run home when, without provocation, he reportedly sucker punched a man inthe face.

The victim was treated at Coastal Carolina Hospital,then transferred to Memorial University medical center in Savannah. The victimhad injuries around his left eye that will require surgery and could likelycause permanent disfigurement, according to Sgt. Robin McIntosh.

In 2001, Ward was charged with assault andbattery with intent to kill, but county prosecutors did not pursue the case,according to court records.

Ward is being held at the Beaufort County DetentionCenter. His bail has been set at $40,000.
