A Ridgeland man was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison for attempted murder.

Richard Kelvin Etheridge of Ridgeland, 50, was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Carmen Mullen in Jasper County. He pleaded guilty to the charge.

Etheridge is convicted of attacking Shawn Williams on Oct. 19, 2012, with a beer bottle at a restaurant in Ridgeland, and stabbing him in the abdomen.

Etheridge attacked Williams after seeing him sitting beside his former girlfriend at the restaurant, according to the state attorney general's office.

The two men did not know each other. Williams spent a week in the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
