Couple sentenced in elder abuse case

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A couple was sentenced Thursday morning for elder cruelty and elder exploitation.

Maria Wiggins and her boyfriend Michael Nesmith received 20 years for elder cruelty. Nesmith will serve eight years in prison and 12 years on probation. He is not eligible for parole because he recidivist.

Wiggins will serve six years of the 20 years behind bars with 14 years on probabtion. She is eligible for parole because she had no priors.

Both received five years for elder exploitation — that sentence will run concurrently to the elder cruelty charge.

Maria Wiggins and her boyfriend Michael Nesmith were sentenced Thursday in connection with elder abuse charges.

Investigators say Wiggins and Nesmith refused to give Wiggins' mother food and dragged her around the house. They were also accused of stealing the elderly woman's Social Security payments and prescription medication.
