South Carolina Senator Tom Davis of Beaufort has introduceda bill that would allow doctors to prescribe cannabis oil.
The oil is used primarily for people suffering from severeepilepsy. Davis said the oil, known as CBD, does not have the chemicals whichwould give a patient the high or stoned affect that marijuana does.
"It is medical marijuana in the sense that the chemical, theCBD oil, but the important distinction is there is not THC, there is nopsychoactive properties to it," said Davis. "It has been shown in clinicaltrials in new York and California to provide relief to individuals with severeepilepsy, so why wouldn't we allow to provide relief to South Carolinians ifdoctors think it will help."
Sixother Republicans have also signed on as co-sponsors of the bill.
