West Savannah man arrested, charged with animal abuse

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Downtown Precinctdetectives arrested a west Savannah man on multiple animal abuse chargesWednesday.

Metro responded to a theft report on Damon Street just after3 a.m. While inspecting the home for signs of theft, officers came across the remainsof a dog located in a pen with a malnourished dog.

A second malnourished dog was discovered, tied to a fence.The dogs appeared to be pit bulls and pit bull mixes.

Injuries consistent with dog fighting were present on theanimals.

Savannah-Chatham Animal control removed the dog's remainsand transported the other two dogs to emergency veterinary clinics. The twodogs were released and are now housed at the animal shelter.

JohnSpaulding, 56, was charged with three counts of animal cruelty from the stateof Georgia, two counts of no shots, two counts of no tags, one count of animalneglect, one count of tethering a dog and one count of failure to report a deadanimal.
