Thieves break into, steal from police officer’s car

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Alocal police officer had two guns and other items stolen from his carovernight, and police are trying to find those responsible.

AFostoria Police officer's car was parked outside of his Toledo home near SouthDetroit and Oxbridge roads. The officer woke up Thursday morning to find hiscar window smashed, and several items taken. A bag, one of his own guns, one ofthe department's guns, his wallet and his police badger were all missing.

ToledoPolice are now trying to figure out who is responsible. They say tips and awatchful eye from neighbors can help prevent something like this from happeningagain.

"That'swhy it's very important that people in the community keep a look out and noticeif people are going around, up and down your street, maybe see if they'relooking inside of cars," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan of the Toledo PoliceDepartment.

Theofficer's wallet and badge were dropped or discarded, and found by a studentwalking to school Friday morning. The student turned them in, but the twohandguns are still missing.

    People gathered at E. Shaver's bookstore in downtown Savannah for a book signing of Larry Peterson's newly published book, "Deadly Dust".

     The book explores the Imperial Sugar refinery explosion 10 years ago where 14 people were killed and more than 3 dozen injured. It is the first full study of the explosions and fire at the Imperial Sugar Refinery, including first-person interviews, court records and hundreds of government documents.
