SCMPD's Operation Sungazer nets drugs, arrests

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

At least threepeople were arrested and illegal drugs were seized Friday afternoon in a raid ledby the Central Precinct Tactical Investigation Unit and the Savannah-ChathamMetropolitan Police Department SWAT Team.

The raid, dubbed OperationSungazer, was the result of a six-week investigation by the TacticalInvestigation Unit. Search warrants were executed on two homes in the Cuyler/Brownsvilleneighborhood.

Five warrants were served. Police saidJoshua McNear, a twice convicted felon, was arrested.

Investigators continue to search eachlocation and to question several people detained.

Police also discovered one of thehouses was being used illegally as a boarding house. City of Savannah CodeEnforcement Officers were also called in to investigate.

Friday's bust in theCuyler/Brownsville neighborhood was the third in recent months led by theCentral TIU. Central Precinct Patrol officers and Crime Suppression Units from Centraland Southside precincts participated in Friday's operation.

"We have moved deliberately andmethodically through this neighborhood to lay the groundwork for today'soperation," said Capt. DeVonn Adams, commander of the Central Precinct, said ina statment. "We have confirmed reports from members of the neighborhood thatdrug sales are conducted in these houses by these suspect and those sales leadto violent crimes against members of the community. Those neighbors have askedfor our help and have aided our efforts to keep this community safe."

Central detectives continue toinvestigate. More charges and arrests could be filed.
