Hunter Army Airfield battalion deploys to Afghanistan

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Georgia Air National Guard personnel have left theirfamilies for a year-long deployment.

Friday, 60 soldiers with the Chinook Helicopter Unit, BravoCompany, First Battalion, 169th General Support Aviation Battalion left fromHunter Army Airfield.

The battalion are off to Fort Hood for training and then onto Afghanistan. Capt. Robert Hutson said their work means much more knowing thelevel of support they have at home.

"The local community just really pours out all their helpand support for military in this area, and they have always stood behind us andtaken care of us and come and volunteered and stood behind us," said Hutson. "Thesupport here is better than any place that I have ever seen it."

For many of these soldiers, this is their third deploymentto Afghanistan, but the first with the newest Chinook helicopter, the CH-47 F.
