Police have captured a suspect after he fled on foot following a routine traffic stop.

The incident started at a traffic stop on Hwy. 17 near Gamble Road when a blue Chevrolet Monte Carlo was stopped for not having any headlights on.

He was alone in the vehicle and fled on foot after being stopped. Police recovered approximately two ounces of marijuana and a gun.

The suspect fled into the woods north of Hwy. 17. Police searched with K-9 units and one helicopter.

The traffic stop came as part of Metro Police's monthly Total Focus saturation, a monthly Metro program that saturates the streets.

Proactive policing is the idea behindit, catching bad guys and deterring crime while flexing the department'smuscle.

"It gives officers the time to do dedicated, reallyassertive police work and look for the stuff that they may not have time to doif they were just riding a beat answering calls," said Metro Police Lt.Harry Trawick.

The police saturation will continue through Sunday morning.
