GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) -

Garden City has been designateda Class 8 in the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating SystemProgram by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Implemented in 1990, the NFIPCRS program is a voluntary program used for recognizing and encouragingcommunity floodplain management activities exceeding the minimum NFIPstandards.

The initial rating of eightwill result in a 10 percent discount for eligible policy holders. The reducedrate should be automatically reflected at the customer's next policy renewal date.

Garden City worked closely withthe Georgia Environmental Protection Division Floodplain Management Programstaff as well as staff from the Insurance Services Office to meet certainstandards in order to secure the Class 8 designation.

Garden City believes that theinitial rating of eight was due in large part to the comprehensive effortsundertaken by Garden City's Stormwater Management Program and FloodplainManagement Program, which are funded almost entirely from the City's StormwaterUtility.
