The first phase is complete in the restoration project to repair areas of erosion on the McQueen's Trail along U.S. 80 going toward Tybee Island.
Chatham County Engineer Leon Davenport says 95 percent of the trail reopened last Friday. Sections of the trail have been closed for the last four weeks as crews filled in the footprint of the trail with rip rap and limestone.
The second phase of the project will begin in about six months because the county is waiting to get permits from the DNR to allow more extensive repair to be done. Davenport said they plan to reestablish the original width of the trail in areas that were narrowed by erosion.
Davenport estimates the entire project to be complete in about a year.
