Trina Mayes indicted on seven counts by grand jury

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A former Savannah-ChathamMetro Police Officer was indicted Wednesday by a Chatham County Grand Jury.

They indicted former DetectiveTrina Mayes on seven counts of making a false statement.

The grand jury returneda true bill on the charges Mayes made false statements to investigators duringthe probe into allegations of corruption and misconduct within the department.

The allegationssurround her alleged involvement with convicted felon William Lamont "Rocky" Sellers,as well as making false statements to Chief Julie Tolbert and City Manager StephanieCutter in an appeal hearing to try and keep her job.

Mayes' criminal defenseattorney Richard Darden said in a statement, "These allegations were fullyinvestigated in 2007 and there was no evidence of wrongdoing on the part of myclient. We will vigorously defend the case before a jury of her peers and I amconfident they will agree my client is innocent of these charges."

Meanwhile, WTOC hasobtained a copy of a memo sent out when the investigation began tellingemployees to cooperate with investigators, there would be no retaliation andthe information they provide will not be used against them.

Mayes' attorney incivil matters, Will Claiborne, said this is another example of the retaliationthey are claiming against the city.
