Kingston airs statewide ad in Senate bid

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Rep. Jack Kingston has launched his first statewide television ad in the crowded Republican primary for the U.S. Senate.

The 30-second advertisement is biographical, pitching the Savannah congressman as a family man who was raised with conservative values. According to a campaign aide, the spot is running in every Georgia television market.

More than a half-dozen Republicans are seeking the nomination to replace retiring Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss. Kingston is the longest-serving Republican congressman in Georgia, but he has lower name recognition in metropolitan Atlanta than some of his rivals.

They include fellow Congressmen Phil Gingrey and Paul Broun and former Secretary of State Karen Handel.

The primary is May 20. A likely runoff would follow in July.
