SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro's Major Accident Investigation Team officers are investigating a five-vehicle pileup that killed a Savannah man late Thursday night.

Police said Jose E. Cuervo III, 26, was killed instantly at about 10:30 p.m. when the Nissan Sentra he was driving collided with a Chevrolet Tahoe on Islands Expressway just west of U.S. 80. A third vehicle was struck by debris from the collision, while two others collided behind the crash.

Police said Randall L. Caruthers II, 30, and Kenneth R. Rosen, 23, who were in the Tahoe, were detained by police. Caruthers complained of injuries and was transported to Memorial University Medical Center after the crash. Each told police the other was driving.

A 65-year-old man from Townsend, GA, was not injured when his Scion XA was struck by debris.

A 58-year-old Savannah woman was driving a Ford Mustang that hit a Hyundai Sonata that had stopped for the crash. The Mustang driver was taken to the hospital after complaining of pain. The 24-year-old woman driving the Sonata was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released.

Police said the driver of the Tahoe was headed westbound on Islands Expressway when he lost control and crossed the median, striking the eastbound Nissan. The other vehicles were traveling eastbound behind the Nissan, according to police.

MAIT continues to investigate to identify the driver of the Tahoe. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Crimestoppers at 912.234.2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
