Drivers mixed on new Truman Pkwy extension

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Phase 5 of the Truman Parkway was dedicated Friday, but it still not officially open.

When the Truman Parkway actually opens up, residents will have easier access from the south side to other parts of the city such as downtown and it will alleviate congestion on Abercorn Street.

But not everyone is sold on the plan.

Overall the majority of drivers say they are excited for the Truman Parkway to open, but some have their doubts on whether it will ease traffic on Abercorn Street.

Once the Truman opens, many south side residents will have much easier access to other parts of the city and a relatively easy route downtown. On the flip side, east side residents and those who live on the island will have a straight shot to south side businesses and to Armstrong Atlantic State University.

While some drivers worry the completion of the Truman Parkway will add to the traffic on Abercorn Street, it is also expected to take many cars off large stretches of that busy street, and make life easier for some drivers.

"It won't allow traffic to build up on Abercorn Street and it will give those people who live on a Wilmington Island a better option, as far as getting home quicker," said driver Galen Palmer.

"The traffic on Abercorn is going to become atrocious because they have three lanes going into a two-lane bridge," said driver James McMillan.

"I think it is going to have a great impact. I think it will make it better, especially for people who live on the eastern side of savannah. I live on the west side. I know Veterans Parkway has made a big difference. I can get to 20 minutes now instead of 40 minutes on Abercorn Street. I think if it is going to have the same impact as Veterans Parkway it is going to be a great thing," said driver Sara Mosley.
