Heard Elementary celebrated the ribbon cutting of a brand new wing Monday afternoon.
The new wing adds 12 new classrooms to the school that will help with overcrowding, a problem that school board members said the school has been dealing with for some time.
The new wing is the first of a two-phase project being funded by an Educational Special Local Option Sales Tax.
"We are just excited to get rid of those portables and get this brandnew building," said Principal Sylvia Wallis. "The students are excited. Theparents are excited. The community is excited, and this is only phase one."
Phase two will bring a newcafeteria, media center and enclosure of school walkways.
