Security could be even tighter at Savannah City Hall very soon, but not because of any imminent security threats.
A new safety plan for City Hall is being created. A metal detectornow sits in the lobby.
It's not up and running, but city staff said police are working onnew security plans for public government buildings.
As of now, you must show ID before being allowed access to CityHall.
City Spokesman Bret Bell said the metal detector is just abotherstep in that safety plan, which included extra officers on duty andsurveillance cameras.
"We can test it and see if it works for City Hall, or if we need adifferent solution," he said.
The pilot program is expected to start in the next two weeks.
How often the metaldetector is used and if it will be only used for large groups will be up to theSavannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Dept.
