Evans County Wildlife Club festival schedule, details

The Evans County Wildlife Club will host the 47th annual Claxton Rattlesnake and Wildlife Festival on Saturday and Sunday.

Organizations from around Georgia such as the Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Southern University Wildlife Center, Zoo Atlanta, Let's Get Wild, Quails Unlimited, and others will join the wildlife club to promote wildlife conservation and provide educational opportunities.

The festival will be held at the at the Wildlife Club festival grounds located at 501 Cedar Avenue in Hagan, which is west of Claxton and off of  Highway 280.

The weekend kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday with the Miss Rattlesnake and Wildlife Festival Pageant at the Evans County Wildlife Club. Eight high school seniors from Evans County will compete for the title of Miss Rattlesnake and Wildlife Festival Queen. They will participate in an  interview, sportswear and evening gown competition. The queen will not be announced until Saturday afternoon at the festival. The 2013 reigning queen Miss Harley Strickland, and Miss Georgia, Carly Mathis will assist in the crowning.

The festival hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.  Adult admission is $6; children 5 and younger are free. 

"We try to offer something for everyone, something for the men, something for the ladies, and definitely something for the children," said Evans County Wildlife Club President Keith Barnard.

Actor John Schneider who played Bo Duke on the TV series "The Dukes of Hazard" will be making a guest appearance at the festival on Saturday, courtesy of the Evans County Wildlife Club and the Claxton Downtown Development Authority. 

Schneider will be riding in style in a replica of the General Lee in the festival parade which kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Claxton. After the parade, Schneider will meet with fans at event headquarters to sign autographs and pose for photographs.   

Other festival attractions include arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, children's games and activities, live entertainment, snake handling demonstrations by professional snake handler Steve Scruggs, NWTF sanctioned turkey calling contest,  interactive activities such as the Department of Natural Resources shooting simulator and local bass club fishing rodeo, and wildlife exhibits  including Georgia Southern University's Birds of Prey Flight demonstrations.
