Emergency crews respond to hazmat situation, no evacuations necessary

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Emergency crews responded to a chemical leak at Zeon Chemicals on Bells Lane Friday morning, but officials said it was bought under control quickly.

Jody Duncan, a spokeswoman for the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Emergency Management Agency (EMA), said no evacuations or shelter in place orders were necessary.

Duncan said a faulty valve on a tank forced the chemical butadiene into the facility's secondary containment system. She added that the chemical did not get into the air.

Numerous agencies, including the Lake Dreamland Fire Department, Metro EMA, EMS, Metropolitan Sewer District, and hazmat teams, were monitoring the situation.

Crews began to clear the scene around 1:30 p.m.
