BLOOMINGDALE, GA (WTOC) -

A convicted child molester faces several felony charges after fighting with Effingham County sheriff's deputies on Thursday afternoon.

A deputy with the Effingham County Sheriff's Office Sex Offender Registry Unit went to the home of 49-year-old Gary Wigley on Horseshoe Road in Bloomingdale for a routine sex offender compliance check.

Wigley became irate, threatened the deputy and fled into a wooded area, according to the ECSO. Other deputies responded located Wrigley in a wooded area.

"Wigley attacked the deputies, which resulted in a violent altercation," sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor said. Deputies were able to subdue the offender and take him into custody. " He said Wigley is a registered sex offender who was convicted of child molestation and felony cruelty to children.

Wigley was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He was then transported to the Effingham County Sheriff's Office where he is facing several charges to include felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer.

He is being held without bond.
